Made the Bread, Bought the (Peanut) Butter, pt.4

George Washington Carver

We eat a fair amount of peanut butter in this house. I was completely excited about Jennifer Reese's Peanut Butter recipe. And it was as easy as promised especially with my new wonder food processor.

I bought one pound of roasted peanuts and we have plenty of oil and salt around the house. In went the peanuts to the food processor's work bowl, a few grinds of salt, and a few tablespoons of canola oil. The blade began to whirl and it just didn't seem to be becoming a paste. I added another drizzle of oil and that did the trick. I had a pint of homemade peanut butter with all its grit and charm. It tasted more roast-y than regular peanut butter and it was not as smooth as commercial peanut butter with crunchiness coming from the salt grains and peanut bits.

I would do this all the time except for the fact that a jar of peanut butter and a pound of peanuts cost just about the same. Peanut prices have gone up in the past year and this reasonably priced staple has spiraled up. Unfortunately, no cost savings means I will put my peanut butter making on hold for a while.
