Take a Hike

National Trails Day 2009 Logo

If the individual and idiosyncratic people of Santa Fe have a universal sport, it is hiking. Trail hiking is the simplest and most direct way to explore the mountains and arroyos that surround The City Different. Of course, A Walk in the Woods is also a superb way to escape (often with your dog) the paved confines of the city. Conveniently, you can celebrate America's 200,000 miles of trails (with a friend) this Saturday, June 6, 2009 at a National Trails Day celebration.

Not to be left out of the nationwide festivities Santa Fe has no less than three National Trails Day events. Express your distinct and unique self at one of the following trails events. Or you could just take a hike.

Santa Fe National Trails Day Events:

  • Railyard Park next to Site Santa Fe from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM on June 6, 2009. Celebrate trails at the Railyard Park with the Trails Alliance of Santa Fe! Vote for your favorite trail, meet the volunteers who keep our community’s trails in good repair, win cool giveaways from vendors like NM Bike N’ Sport, Dharma Maps, Sangre de Cristo Mountain Works, and REI (really cool stuff, like trail maps, a cycling jersey, gift certificates, and hiking equipment!), sign up to learn trail repair skills, and learn how to improve your on-trail experience!

  • Hyde Memorial State Park offers two hikes exploring the beauty of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. and a moonlight hike at 8:00 p.m. on an easy half mile trail that is transformed at night by the moon. See the park in a new light on an Owl Prowl and discover fun things to do with a Lifesaver. Call 505-983-7175 for details.

  • Enjoy Dawn and Dusk at Cerrillos Hills State Park with two cool guided trail walks scheduled at 8:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. The morning hike will concentrate on the beautiful flora that graces the hills, as well as early birds and late moths. Binoculars will be provided. A twilight-to-night walk in the hills begins at 7:30 p.m., “listening” for bats with a special device and using the five senses to discover the nightlife in the hills and the heavens above. Meet at the Cerrillos Hills parking lot on County Road 59 about ½ mile north of the Cerrillos village plaza. For more information, call 505-474-0196
